BACKGROUND: Hyperprolactinemia (HPRL) is often found in patients with chronic schizophrenia. However, recent studies have suggested that HPRL may not only be due to antipsychotic medication, but a pre – existing condition. AIMS: To determine prolactin levels in patients with a First Psychotic Episode (FPE) without previous antipsychotic treatment and to compare the results with healthy controls. To determine sexual functioning in patients with a FPE who have not previously received antipsychotic treatment and to compare the results with healthy controls. To relate prolactin levels with sexual functioning in both patients and healthy controls. METHOD: Cross-sectional study. Inclusion criteria are: Patients with a diagnosis of FPE between 16-55 years old without previous antipsychotic treatment of Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu / Hospital of Sant Joan de Déu. Healthy controls were recruited. RESULTS: 40 patients and 33 healthy controls were included in the study (67.5 % men and 32.5 % women). The average age was 25.48 years (SD 9.97). The Duration of Untreated Psychosis (DUP) was 14.52months (SD 16.28). Higher levels of prolactin were found in patients with a FPE compared to healthy controls (p=0.011). No differences were found regarding sexual functioning between patients and controls. A negative correlation, but not significant, was found between prolactin and sexual functioning in both groups. CONCLUSION: In our study we detected higher prolactin levels in patients than in controls. On the other hand, sexual functioning did not differ in patients compared to controls. The correlation between prolactin and sexual functioning was not significative.
